There are a number of roof windows on the market, but the Velux brand is the most popular. Roof windows are a great way to add natural light to a room, and they can also be used to improve ventilation.
If you are considering adding a roof window to your home, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you will need to determine the size and shape of the window that will best fit your needs. You will also need to decide if you want a fixed or operable window. Fixed windows cannot be opened, while operable windows can be opened to allow for ventilation. Finally, you will need to decide on the type of roofing material that you have.
If you have a sloped roof, you will need a roof window that is designed to be installed on a sloped roof. If you have a flat roof, you can install a roof window that is designed for a flat roof.

Roof windows and rooflights come in an array of shapes and sizes, and choosing the right dimensions for your project is critical. The ‘standard’ for roof windows is 900x600mm, and these are installed between rafters at 600mm centres. Other common sizes are 980x980mm and 900x1200mm – the latter is designed to fit in a double-rafter space. They can also be provided in much larger sizes – for example, Glazing Vision Pitchglaze windows can measure up to 3000x1000mm.
As with all structural requirements, relevant calculations should be carried out by our qualified structural engineer. The most effective way of supporting a roof window is to use double trimmers for horizontal support and double rafters for vertical support. Double hangers are placed in each corner, and single hangers are located around connected rafters.
Remember that the size of the window aperture may not be the size of the window itself. The actual requirements will depend on the individual roof window, so be sure to consult our professionals early in the planning stages.
